Listservs, email networks, and online communities predate blogs by years. The crippled quoting and commenting tools provided on blogs aren't meant to increase discussion but to allow the blogholders to control who can say what and how. This makes them an ideal tool for those who need adulation but can't take the heat - in other words, critics.

What's true is not new, what's new is not true.
